We practice in our surrounding counties, including Monterey, San Benito, and Santa Clara; as well as other California venues, such as Alameda, Contra Costa, Merced, Fresno, San Francisco, San Joaquin, San Mateo, and Stanislaus Counties. We have an extensive and well-documented history of success at trial. We are skilled in the utilization of all forms of alternative dispute resolution (ADR).


About John S. Burton

Mr. Burton has tried in excess of 50 jury trials in Courts throughout Northern California. Mr. Burton was the prevailing appellate attorney in Atkinson vs. Elk Corporation, a case of first impression in the State of California, interpreting the provisions of the Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act in the context of a claim for defective roofing shingles.

Mr. Burton received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Santa Clara University in 1971, and his Juris Doctorate, Summa Cum Laude, from Santa Clara University School of Law in 1974. He has been a presence in the Santa Cruz community for over 40 years.

Mr. Burton is a member of the State Bar of California, admitted in 1974, and various Federal Bars, as well as a member of the following organizations:

  • Santa Cruz County Bar Association
  • Santa Cruz Trial Lawyers Association
  • Monterey County Bar Association
  • Association of Defense Counsel of Northern California and Nevada

He has been identified as one of the Northern California Super Lawyers for the past several years. Mr. Burton was President of the Santa Cruz County Bar Association (2014), and is frequently retained as an arbitrator and mediator by plaintiff and defense attorneys in litigation matters pending in Santa Cruz, Monterey, San Benito and Santa Clara Counties. He also has an active Mediation Practice, Monterey Bay Mediation.

Mr. Burton has been named as an AV Preeminent lawyer, the highest possible rating for an attorney, by Martindale Hubbell Law Directory (5.0). AV Preeminent is a significant rating accomplishment achieved by only a small percentage of attorneys in the State of California, and a testament to the fact that Mr. Burton’s peers grade him at the highest level of professional excellence.
